LVDTs are the unsung heroes of countless applications across an extensive range of industries. These include commercial, military, industrial, and consumer uses. Today, we’ll look at several specific applications to provide a visual representation how an LVDT is integrated into each. It’s certainly one of those cases where the pictures are worth a thousand words. Let’s take a look:

Automotive/Transportation

LVDTs are utilized through vehicles to measure things such as pedal travel, actuator displacement, and pressure regulation.

Parts Assembly – Using Vented LVDT Used on automation equipment to ensure proper alignment of parts prior to assembly. Suspension System – Using Isolation Tube Vented LVDT Measures fluid level through float position inside a valve, providing stable vehicle ride performance.

Manufacturing

LVDTs are found throughout the industrial world. In manufacturing facilities, they are used for measurement in quality control processes, to collect feedback for equipment controls, among many others uses.

Bottle Height Inspection – Height is measured by the position of a vertical rod coming in contact with the mouth of the bottle. Structural Testing – Durability of structural components are continuously checked under conditions of stress.

Paper Machine Activators for the Printing Industry – actuator feedback is critical in controlling paper coating thickness.

Garments/Fabrics

For fabric-based industries, LVDTs provide a critical roll to their manufacturing processes, including:

Knife Intelligence for Garment Machine – Monitors position of knife blade during fabric cutting process, allowing for actuated correction. Roller Thickness Measurement – Creates proper spacing between rollers to achieve desired material thickness.

Measurement

By their very nature, LVDTs themselves are measurement devices, but they are often used in the operation of more complex analytical systems for specialized uses.

Specific Gravity Probe – Fluid density is determined by measuring the position of a float suspended in a known flux liquid. Weighing Systems – Knowing the deflection of a spring and the spring constant leads to the calculation of weight or force.

Flow Control

LVDTs are found in servovalves which are used in many applications including aerospace, power generation, and plastic product manufacturing.

Hydraulic Servovalves – Immersed in compatible hydraulic fluid, a vented housing equalizes pressure throughout the LVDT. Hydraulic Servovalves – An isolation tube houses the moving core and protects the LVDT from the high pressure fluid.
